Jesus sees how people are harassed, hurting, and helpless, and He looks on us with compassion. In this passage, Jesus uses the illustration of sheep without a shepherd to describe our desperate condition and our need for His care, guidance and protection. Then Jesus describes people as a great harvest ready to be gathered. The fields are ready, the need is urgent, and Jesus calls His followers to pray and go and gather people to Christ.
