Mary Is Weeping

Apr 13, 2025    Shad Baker

How does Jesus respond to our disappointment and sorrow?

If you were weeping, what would Jesus say?

In John 20:11–18, we find Mary Magdalene weeping outside the empty tomb. It’s there, in her grief, that the risen Jesus meets her and asks two deeply personal questions:

“Why are you weeping?”

“Whom are you seeking?”

These are not just questions for Mary—they're questions for us. Jesus knows our pain, yet He gently invites us to reflect on the source of our sorrow and the focus of our hope. Are we searching for the risen, powerful Christ, or for something—or someone—less able to help?

As Mary weeps and searches, Jesus calls her by name.
